New Buildings at Academy of Innovation

We are excited to announce that we will be adding three modular buildings to the Citrus Hills site for our Academy of Innovation (AOI) and creating dedicated office space for the AOI staff in the existing G building. Once this project is complete AOI and Citrus Hills will have delineated, separate campuses.

On December 18th, 2024, Corona Norco Adult School held its 2024 Recognition Ceremony at the Corona High School Theater. The night was bustling with joy, celebrating students from the first cohorts of the brand new Health Care Training Center as well as the ESL, CTE, and Diploma graduates. Our community partners were recognized for their continued support of Adult Education, and an award was given to Corona Regional Medical Center for their grace and opening their doors to our medical pathway students. Students at McKinley Elementary have been learning about the contributions of African-Americans who positively changed our lives.|Ms. Minor’s 3rd grade class learned about female African-American artist, Faith Ringgold, who is best-known for her story quilts. |They also learned about important scientists and scholars like George Washington Carver who discovered over 300 uses for peanuts like making shampoo, wood stains, and even using peanuts to make plastic!

This is his second CNUSD spelling bee championship and he now moves on to the RCOE regional spelling bee, to qualify for the national spelling bee in Washington DC if he wins there.

The Corona-Norco Unified School District has updated its student dress code. During the 2021-2022 school year, CNUSD began the process of updating our District’s Board Policy on student dress code as there was a need to refresh our current policies to be more enforceable, clear, and non-discriminatory. With the assistance of various stakeholder groups, we made changes to how our Dress and Grooming policy was written.

We want to congratulate Grant, Jack, and Nolan Coombs, who proudly represent Norco High, on their amazing accomplishment on becoming the Skills USA National Champs! Competing in Automated Manufacturing Technology, these individuals performed brilliantly under pressure, and in addition to winning gold, each one was awarded $5,000. Grant, Jack, and Nolan will all be attending Cal Poly Pomona, where each one will be studying a different field of Engineering.

Orange Grove High School students participated in a two day design build competition to promote career awareness of the construction industry among high school students. |This event was presented by The CIE Foundation (Construction industry Education Foundation).|During the four-month program, each team is challenged to design and prepare several construction documents according to criteria outlined by CIEF.| Teams build their structure (shed) during a two-day competition and are judged by industry professionals on the completion of design, construction, code compliance, and safety.
|Orange Grove was sponsored by Bombel Construction. |They provided all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the competition. |In addition, they helped mentor and oversee the blueprint design for the Shed.

Superintendent Thurmond visited Raney Intermediate to learn about the Raney ROCKS mentorship program which is aimed at transforming school culture and was recognized by the California School Board Association (CSBA) with a Golden Bell Award in Oct. 2021.|Raney ROCKs is a series of programs at Raney Intermediate School aimed at transforming school culture.|Together, these programs have brought forth student engagement and a sense of community on the Raney Intermediate campus.|It was developed to address the behavioral needs and to decrease a high suspension rate.|Since implementing this comprehensive program, the suspension rate has dropped 12.4% from 15.4% in 2017-18 to 3% in 2020-21.

Norco High Launches New eSports Arena

Norco High School opened a new dedicated eSports Gaming Arena on Tuesday, March 8th. |eSports is a CIF sanctioned education-based opportunity for students at CIF member schools which promotes team building, inclusion, STEM, job skills, and can lead to college opportunities, even scholarships.

||Norco High School was able to develop this special space due to having an unused theater space. There are currently 30 players on the Norco High eSports team with a fall and spring season.|“We are extremely proud and excited to have this opportunity to grow our eSports program,” said Rob Ibbetson, Norco High Principal. “eSports is for all students and helps them connect to school." |PlayVS is the official and exclusive eSports provider for CIF. Some of the games played in competition include League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers, Rocket League, and FIFA.|

The CNUSD Orchestra Program will begin in 7th grade at El Cerrito Middle School and continue through the 12th grade at Santiago High School. By creating a magnet program at these two sites, orchestra students will benefit by being enrolled in courses containing only strings players which will allow more focused instruction specific to the needs of these musicians.

Corona High Decathlon Team Wins Big in County Competition

The Corona High School Decathlon Team took 3rd place overall and 2nd place in the Super Quiz category at the Riverside County Academic Decathlon Competition winning 26 medals in total. Students met virtually every Saturday for the last six months to prepare for the big event. The theme for this year’s decathlon was Cold War.

Board of Education Selects New Superintendent

On Saturday, Oct. 31 the Board of Education in closed session voted unanimously (5-0) to name Dr. Sam Buenrostro as the new superintendent of Corona-Norco Unified School District, pending contract negotiations. The Board has instructed legal counsel to open negotiations with Dr. Buenrostro over the terms of his employment with the District as its next superintendent.

Elementary Waiver Update

On October 9, 2020, the District submitted a waiver application to the Riverside County Department of Public Health (a copy of which is available on the District’s website in the “Frequently Asked Questions” section). In response to the waiver application, the County Department of Health informed us that our elementary cohort model would not qualify. Based on that information, it was clear the County was not going to further consider our application.

Riverside County Reverts to Purple Tier

This afternoon, Wednesday, Oct. 7 at a Special Meeting in closed session, the Board of Education took no action. They will continue the superintendent search process and proceed with interviewing internal and external candidates.

CNUSD Reopening Update

As of today, Riverside County will have been in the Red Tier for 14 days, permitting schools in our county to begin a reopening process. Assuming our county’s health data remains unchanged, CNUSD is prepared to welcome the physical return of our students. The information and opening dates below are subject to change if we revert back to the purple tier and stay there for two consecutive weeks.

CNUSD continues our large-scale planning efforts to prepare for the return to in-person instruction. We remain committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students and staff when schools do reopen. On September 22, Riverside County moved to the Red Tier of Governor Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Detailed information about the tier system is on the CDPH website.

Federal Program Review Places CNUSD in Top 5% of Districts in CA

School districts that receive federal funding may be chosen every two years for a review by the state. Corona-Norco was selected for a review for the 2020-21 school year. The review was comprehensive and included: Adult Education, Compensatory Education (Title I), English Learner Programs (Title III), Expanded Learning Programs, Fiscal Monitoring, Homeless Education, and School Support and Improvement (SSI)

According to the Governor’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, once counties remain in the “Red” Tier for 14 consecutive days, schools may begin to reopen for in-person instruction according to State Guidance for the Reopening of Schools.

We honor all those who lost their lives as well as the brave first responders and ordinary Americans who showed extraordinary courage to save others on that fateful day. As we reflect on the weeks that followed 9/11, may we remember the uniting of our country in solidarity through the pain and hardship, and today may we do the same as we persevere through a global pandemic.

17 Home Gardens Academy Scholars Pass AP Spanish Exam

The Corona-Norco Unified School District is set to recover over $1.1 million from an insurance claim for loss due to employee theft. The District filed the claim for financial losses related to the alleged charges of embezzlement of funds by former Assistant Superintendent of Facilities, Ted Rozzi.

The Corona-Norco Unified School District Board of Education voted 5-0 at a Special Meeting of the Board last night, August 25, 2020, approving a contract for Leadership Associates to lead the Superintendent Search in an amount not to exceed $42,150.

You may have seen in the local news that Riverside County TK-6 schools have recently qualified to apply for a waiver from the State in order to reopen schools. The District is continuing to assess the conditions of readiness, staff and student safety, community interest, and labor negotiations for the potential of reopening schools. A waiver may only be considered if one is requested by the superintendent, in consultation and support with labor, parent, and community organizations.
