PROGRAM OVERVIEW

U CAN STOP (United Corona and Norco Stamp Tobacco Out Program) is the Corona-Norco Unified School District’s Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program. U CAN STOP aims to prevent and reduce tobacco use among our students in grades 6  through 12 by providing tobacco-specific student instruction, reinforcement activities, special events, intervention, and cessation programs for students. Our program collaborates with organizations throughout the community to develop students’ social skills and resiliency. TUPE funding originates from tobacco tax revenue and provides prevention programs in grades six through twelve.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the U CAN STOP/TUPE program is to reduce tobacco use among youth by helping them make healthful tobacco-related decisions through tobacco-specific, research-validated educational instruction, and activities. Positive youth development, a primary goal of the program,  is achieved by building knowledge, social skills, and resilience. Collaboration with Riverside County’s tobacco control program is an integral part of program planning. The school, parents, and the larger community must work together so that students will be aware of a cohesive effort and concern for their health and, consequently, their ability to succeed in school.

STRATEGIES

  • Prevention: Implement science-based and research-validated curriculum in grades 6-12.
  • Intervention: Implement mandatory intervention groups for students caught smoking or in possession of tobacco products.
  • Cessation: Provide cessation consultation for students who self-refer.

DANGERS OF VAPING

What is Vaping?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol or vapor produced by a vape device. Because of the rise in popularity of JUUL, a specific type of vape device, many teens and young adults use the term “JUULING” (pronounced Jeweling), instead of vaping (www.drugfree.org).

How Does Vaping Work?
Vape devices contain 4 basic components: a cartridge or a tank to hold e-liquid (or e-juice/vape sauce), a heating element known as an atomizer, a battery and a mouthpiece to inhale.

A sensor detects when a person is trying to inhale. This triggers the battery to supply electricity to the coil of wire or the atomizer. The heat given off by the coil is transferred to the e-liquid, which can only take so much energy before it’s vaporized, and this is what users inhale. While the output of the devices may look like vapor, it is actually aerosol (www.drugfree.org).
