Why Take Math 4 Years
The shift into Common Core has brought significant change to the math sequence and subject offerings, including the change from Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra 2 to Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3. The California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 (SB 359) and board policy 6645, requires our district to provide an opportunity to students to complete a sequence of mathematics courses recommended for admission into the UC and Cal State systems. Because of this change, CNUSD implemented a process in which 8th grade students who earned a "B" or better in Math 8 may elect to take a 2-week course during the summer to prepare for Integrated Math 2 (and by-passing Integrated Math 1). Additionally, the new law and board policy also requires all high schools to administer a math test within the first month of school to all 9th grade students. This is to ensure that students are properly placed and will serve to identify students who should advance to Integrated Math 2.
