What is the District’s protocol when there is a positive COVID-19 case on campus?

  • Communicate via email to all employees at the school site, families whose student(s) is in a classroom where a positive COVID-19 case has occurred and identified close contacts.
  • Deep clean all areas where the infected person spent time, and disinfect any touched surfaces.
  • Allow students under quarantine to work independently at home when sent home.
  • Inform the Riverside County Health Department when a COVID-19 positive case is identified on CNUSD property.
  • Provide as transparent reporting as possible on our COVID-19 dashboard while still protecting confidentiality.
  • Continue to provide important health and safety information to families and staff.
  • Monitor the symptoms of students and staff as well as case counts.

  • Provide identifiable information of a COVID-19 positive individual
  • Communicate prior to a positive test verification (For example, if someone is symptomatic, notification will not get sent out until there is a confirmed positive COVID-19 case.)
  • Immediately close schools for a positive case
  • Allow a COVID-19 identified staff member or student to return to campus without meeting return to school criteria.

We realize there are many questions regarding the quarantine protocols set forth by the California Department of Public Health for students who have had close contact with a positive COVID-19 case. Attached are the most current protocols as of today.

How long do students have to quarantine after COVID-19 exposure?

Please click on the Quarantine Decision Tree below to review our quarantine protocols for students who have been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case. Exposed is define as being in "close contact" with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more in a 24 hour period.

  • If the exposed student or staff member is fully vaccinated (at least 14 days from the last dose), they will not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms (proof required).
  • If the exposed student or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19 in the previous 90 days, they will not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms (proof required).

In the event of an outbreak (which is defined as 3 or more positive cases within a 14-day period in a classroom or on a team) the following quarantine procedures will be followed:

  • All students in the exposed classroom or team must be quarantined for 10 days from the last date of exposure. Students can return to school on day 11 if they have no symptoms and are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Students must continue to monitor for symptoms days 11-14.  A symptom screening is required on day 11 which will be provided to parents to complete.
  • Testing is recommended 5-7 days from the date of exposure.
  • Students who are fully vaccinated or have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days are exempt from quarantine and can continue to attend school. (proof required)

*Please note that all information described above will be clearly outlined in the notification letter to parents in the event your child(ren) are impacted by a classroom outbreak.

If someone in my home has tested positive for COVID-19 can my students still go to school?

If a student is exposed to a positive COVID-19 case in the home through close contact which is being within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more in a 24 hour period, they will need to quarantine at home for a minimum of 10 days and up to 20 days, dependent on if the positive case is able to completely isolate away from the student.

How frequently is the COVID-19 Dashboard Updated?

The COVID-19 Dashboard is updated frequently throughout the school day, as it is a step in our contact-tracing process. We aim to have the dashboard updated within 24 hours of when the positive case is reported to our school administration.

CNUSD will be offering free on-site COVID-19 testing for students or staff at various sites across the District.

As our parents and students cheer on our athletic teams this school year, we would like to make the following reminders:

  • Masks are mandatory for all indoor events, regardless of vaccination status.
  • Masks are highly encouraged for outdoor events.

We ask our families and students to help do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 delta variant in our community! Thank you!

As students and staff enjoy their time off away from school on the weekends, we encourage everyone to continue to practice safety measures to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.

We can all do our part to help keep our community safe.
