It is the expectation that students of Norco High School will maintain positive and punctual attendance to all of their assigned classes. It is also the expectation that students not only arrive ON TIME, but that they arrive prepared to learn and actively participate in the curriculum planned for the day. Students shall have the appropriate materials, tools, and mindset to achieve academic success.
ABSENCE
A parent/guardian is required to call the Attendance Office as soon as they know their student will not be attending school. Absences not cleared within 10 days will be recorded as an unexcused/truancy and Saturday School will be issued for the student.
Messages left with the Attendance Office require the following information:
- Student’s first and last name
- Student’s 6-digit I.D. number
- The reason for absence (please be brief when possible)
- The name and relationship of person calling
- If you do not know the student I.D. number, please spell the last name.
Remember to call each day the student is absent.
Students who continue to be truant or tardy to class will be placed on a School Attendance Contract. If the student's attendance does not improve, a hearing will be scheduled with the School Attendance Review Board, and may be reported to the Riverside County District Attorney's office.
A pupil shall be excused from school when the absence is:
Due to his or her illness.
Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic services rendered
For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California.
Due to illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent.
For justifiable, personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral services, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, or attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil’s absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board.
A pupil absent from school under this section shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, shall be given full credit therefore, the teacher of any class from which a pupil is absent shall determine the tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence. LATE ARRIVAL
Students arriving 30 minutes late to class need a pass from the attendance office. If students arrive prior to 30 minutes late, students will go directly to class.
Oversleeping, missing the bus, traffic, car problems, etc. are not considered valid reasons for excused tardies.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Students must be signed out by parents or guardians. Parent/Guardian must call the Attendance Office after 7:45 a.m. indicating the time and reason the student needs to leave campus. If the student drives it should be indicated on the early dismissal pass and the student will be allowed to sign themselves out prior to leaving.
Cut off time for checking out a student early is 3:00 pm
(30 minutes prior to the bell at the end of the day) - no exceptions.

IF YOU RECEIVED AN ABSENCE PHONE CALL IN ERROR
Check the Q Parent Portal to locate which class your student was marked absent/tardy. Send an email to the teacher regarding the absence or have the student speak to the teacher the following day. Your student will need to clear the error directly with the teacher who marked them absent/tardy by picking up an Attendance Verification slip from the attendance office and having the teacher sign and submit it to the Attendance Office.
IF YOU REPORTED AN ABSENCE AND STILL RECEIVE A PHONE CALL
Please call the Attendance Office again. Due to unforeseen circumstances it’s possible the phone call was not received, interpreted or not recorded.
STUDENT IN CLASS NOT FEELING WELL
For safety reasons students should not contact parents/guardians from the classroom. Students should request a pass from their teacher to visit the health office, and the school health clerk/nurse will contact the parent/guardian.
TARDY POLICY & PROCEDURES
Students are expected to be on time to school. Students are considered tardy if they are not inside their classroom when the tardy/passing bell rings. Tardy students must sign in with the Attendance Office if 30 minutes tardy. Students will be subject to disciplinary action. Tardiness applies before school, between classes, and after lunch.

The attendance office will run weekly reports and notify students of their tardies and detention hours.
Detention information is listed below as a reminder:
Monday - Friday: DURING LUNCH in K19
Wednesday (ONLY): 8:40 am - 9:40 am in K19
**All detention hours MUST be cleared within 1 school day of receiving and MUST be cleared in order to attend a school rally or school dance.
TARDY SWEEP LOCKOUTS
Students who get caught in a tardy lockout will receive a 1 hour detention. Lockouts are randomly scheduled and can happen any day and during any class period.
10-10 Rule
No passes the first or last 10 minutes of every class.
Students may not be released from class either during the first 10 minutes of the class period or the last 10 minutes. This includes parents calling students out of class (unless it is an emergency).
